With need rising in communities nationwide, The Salvation Army is calling on Canadians to give generously this holiday season.

When Ouafaa Eladmi and her family moved to Canada three years ago, she knew they were embarking on a transitional period that might require some sacrifices, one of them being the Christmas season. The family, originally from Casablanca, Morocco, first had to adapt to their new surroundings. The move from a big city to a small town such as High River, Alta., was a significant change. With no family or many friends around, Ouafaa was expecting a toned-down Christmas.

Windsor-Essex residents came through in a big way in last week's Goodfellows paper fundraiser.The three-day paper drive took place in Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle, and organizers say the total surpassed their $375,000 goal.

The people of Windsor-Essex came through for the annual Windsor Goodfellows newspaper fundraising campaign.Between November 27 and the 29, volunteers stood on street corners and in intersections in Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle to collect donations to support the Goodfellows.In all, $381,575 was raised, surpassing the goal of $375,000.

The BMO Real Financial Progress Index reveals 65% of Canadians plan to give back to their community this holiday season, despite rising costs and economic uncertainty. The Index was developed based on a survey of 2500 adults conducted by Ipsos in Canada and the U.S.
